Window to the Underground

One of the easiest ways to catch a glimpse of the Eureka Underground is to peer through the metal grate in the sidewalk in front of The Vintage Soda fountain shop on Main Street. If you have a flashlight or a camera with flash, you should be able to see some of the old windows from the original level of the storefront. The new owners have purchased an authentic 1946 Stanley Knight Soda Fountain, and this is a great place to cool off with a sundae or banana split during the hot Eureka summers. There is also a trellised space between this building and the next, through which one can see steps leading down to the underground level. The new walking tour being offered by the Downtown Network allows you to descend these steps and get an inside glimpse of the basement level beneath the soda shop.
